When Adelaide’s Michael Wood hits the 6,000 plus steps of Adelaide Oval’s Stadium Stomp this July, his fight with blood cancer won’t be too far from his mind.

The 22-year-old Redwood Park man has battled cancer three times – and his fight continues. Today he is still undergoing treatment for Hodgkins Lymphoma - and will be among the thousands of South Australians making every step count for the Leukaemia Foundation at this year’s event.

Michael was first diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma when he was 13 years old. At that time he had a mass 29 centimetres wide growing in his chest.

“You could see it covering the whole right hand side of my rib-cage – it was massive,” Michael said.

After a gruelling six rounds of chemo and then six weeks of radiotherapy he made it back to school in Year 9. But remission was short. That same year he relapsed and went through it all again.

“Remission only lasted about three months. I then had to have four more cycles of chemo – then I had an autologous stem cell transplant.”

“It was rough.”

While Michael, like many teens with cancer, missed a significant amount of school during this time – he fought back. For six years he led a normal life. He returned to playing soccer and cricket and even achieved a 99.9 ATAR in Year 12 at Modbury High School, going on to study Chemical Engineering at Adelaide University.

“For about six years I was pretty much back to normal. I went back to playing soccer and restarted cricket the same year,” Michael said.

“But then in March, 2016 it came back. I’ve been having treatment pretty much ever since.”

Michael and his friends will be among the thousands of South Australians expected part in Stadium Stomp Adelaide Oval on Saturday, July 9 – and he’s urging participants to join him and help raise funds for the Leukaemia Foundation – this year’s Stadium Stomp charity partner.
